City centre with hundreds of shops

We have twice been awarded the title “City Centre of the Year”. Here, shopping centres and large chain stores sit alongside small, independent, niche shops. There are lots of cosy cafés and restaurants, serving a wide range of specialities. The proximity of Umeå to the north and Sundsvall to the south provides access to even more amenities.

Events and MODO Hockey

For many people, Örnsköldsvik is synonymous with MODO Hockey. Home games are played at the Fjällräven centre, which is also used for rock concerts, musicals, trade fairs and other major events.

Leisure-time centres

Young persons can spend time together at the leisure-time centres in the evening. Adult leaders are available on site and, naturally, the centres and activities are drug-free. Parents are welcome to visit the centres.

There are centres in Bjästa, Björna, Bredbyn, Domsjö, Gideå, Gullänget, Husum, Järved, Mellansel and Själevad. There is a leisure-time centre called Sliperiet in the centre of Örnsköldsvik.

At the "Arken" library in Örnsköldsvik you can borrow books in different languages, films and music, as well as read the paper and use the Internet. The library arranges story times, plays and reading activities for children.

There are local libraries in Bjästa, Björna, Bredbyn, Husum, Själevad, Skorped, Trehörningsjö as well as at Nolaskolan and Parkskolan in Örnsköldsvik.

Museums, art and music

At Örnsköldsvik's museum and art gallery you can visit exhibitions and learn about local history. Several rural museums highlight their local cultural heritage. The High Coast Art Valley runs along the Nätra river, exhibiting art which is placed outside in natural surroundings.

Various facilities provide a range of theatre and music. In Gideå you can watch live opera from the major European stages. In addition to the cultural life in Örnsköldsvik, you can easily take advantage of all that the neighbouring city of Umeå has to offer.

Cultural heritage sites

There are lots of places to visit if you want to know more about the history of the region. Genesmon archaeological open-air museum has a reconstructed Iron Age farmstead. There are more than a dozen local heritage sites to visit, from well-preserved industrial environments to farmhouses.

NorrlandsOperan in Umeå provides top-class cultural highlights within opera, concerts, dance, theatre and art.
